A Trio of Lights

For the first time this year, it felt as if Spring might not be that far away. The evenings though, still arrive early and as darkness falls, having a cosy and well-lit corner to retreat to is very welcome. Especially if you have a room in your garden you can retreat to for a little me-time.

I’ve been following @southwoodliving for a couple of months and love the aesthetic of Hayley Southwood’s cabin/event space, which has many inspiring take-outs. With its contemporary, external design and black exterior, the garden room's rustic interior is very inviting – it’s available for hire too. What better way to see if a similar style might be right for you than to attend one of their workshops and visit this space? [The cabin was created by Hayley Southwood who also runs a business support network for women, @southwoodsocialhub and @southwoodeventspace in Buckinghamshire.]

As daylight fades and I scrolled through the latest Insta posts, the images of the trio of lights drew me in. The low-hung group of shades is almost an art installation, a simple set-up yet striking nonetheless and it brightly illuminates an otherwise dark corner. If you like the Soho Farmhouse vibe, then you’ll love this. It’s an idea that’s easy to "borrow" with some help from a friendly electrician and ceiling hooks. Hayley sourced the lampshades with the help of friend Jemma Cox. The shades are three different sizes of the ‘BIDAR’ in sand-coloured rice paper from a range of light fittings at The House Doctor. [Kay Prestney of the @kinship_creativedc mentions that similar lampshades are also available at @boliacom ] Or take any three similar but slightly different lampshades, hang them closely together and adapt the idea to suit your own style.

I also love every single, inspiring image on the @housedoctorcom feed, they are thoughtfully styled and beautifully shot captures of the House Doctor's curated range. Their calming and muted colour palette is full of subtle blends of natural colours. Ideally suited for a Scandi Rustic interior in your garden room, cabin, studio, barn or outbuilding – blurring the lines between the inside and out. Bolia.com are another Scandinavian powerhouse – their own ‘Balloon’ pendant lampshades are made of a sheer fabric (which are similarly organic-inspired in shape), although hand-sewn and rather more expensive than the paper ones by The House Doctor.

House Doctor is a Scandinavian design house which is part of a group of four lifestyle brands under the Danish collective portfolio of the ‘Society of Lifestyle’. When the high street opens up again you can find their pieces at various UK stockists, including Southwood Living, Petersham Nurseries, H&M and the Conran shop, among others, or online via retail stockists in Denmark.
